DO MORE WORK
The only way you can keep your job is if the employer or management sees you are valuable. Many employees believe in doing only what they feel is fair for them to do. However, in a down economy, that won’t cut it at all. You need to do more work than your peers. Help the organization save time, save money or make money and you are sure to remain integral in the company’s operations.
This does not mean that you have to be a pompous employee. Just subtly let the people that matter what your skills are. Be your own greatest fan and be keen to spread your ideas on how the company can grow.
You should be able to work on your own. If you face a problem, try to seek for the solution on your own first. While it is good to be able to work on a team, nowadays employers are more interested in employing self starters.
COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR COWORKERS
You should ensure that you communicate with your co-workers be they your supervisors or your direct reports. By developing a reputation as a communicative person, you would be perceived as integral to the business processes of your employer. Therefore, you would be unlikely to get the boot in the type of mass sack described in the beginning of this post.
